People who prefer to sleep in a cold bedroom seem to have a very good intuition. According to a recent study, the temperature in your bedroom affect strongly influence the quality of sleep. Although most of us don’t know the temperature we usually have in the bedroom, this is an important detail.
Doctor Christopher Winter, the coordinator of the study at Charlottesville Neurology & Sleep Medicine in the United States, says that the bedroom temperature should be between 16 and 20 degrees in the night for a restful sleep. If the temperature exceeds 24 degrees or falls below 12 degrees, your sleep is affected.
But why does the temperature it’s so important? Body temperature oscillates naturally during 24 hours, the highest values are during night, and the lowest in the morning, around 5 o’clock. Sleep is usually set when body temperature decreases, therefore a cool room will make us fall asleep faster.
You will have a more restful sleep
Researchers at the University of Australia found that some forms of insomnia can occur due to an inability of the body to properly adjust its temperature. If you find it hard to sleep at night, a cool room can help you lower your body temperature so you can have a deep, restful sleep.
You will look younger
When you sleep in a room where the temperature exceeds 21 degrees, the body no longer produces enough melatonin, one of the most effective anti-aging hormones. But if you sleep in a room where it is completely dark and cool enough for your body temperature to drop, melatonin, also known as the sleep hormone, will be released in adequate amounts and the body will be complete relaxed.
It helps you lose weight
The low body temperature during sleep is also associated with the release of growth hormone and the reduction of cortisol, the stress hormone. When you can’t sleep enough or sleep well, you will wake up with a high level of cortisol in the body, which means you will have a bad mood in the morning, but also the feeling to eat something sweet.
