History
Roughly translated, Jin Shin Jyutsu means the art of knowing one’s self. People believe that the technique began 3000 years ago, but became forgotten due to the nature of passing on knowledge verbally at the time. The art was reintroduced to Japan in the early 1900s and made its way to the United States in the 1950s, according to Rachel Hill, author of Nursing from the Inside-Out: Living and Nursing from the Highest Point of Your Consciousness. Since its rediscovery, students document the healing practice to retain for future generations.
Finger Technique
The Japanese practice takes years to fully master. Newcomers to the ideology and practice can start small with a finger technique meant to sooth worries, anxiety, sadness and anger. The method takes about five minutes, according to Bright Side, and each finger focuses on a different set of emotions to promote self-relaxation. By holding each finger for one or two minutes, balance and harmony are restored to the body and can be performed multiple times a day for a quick energizer.
Safety Energy Locks
There are many different applications of the technique, with the most studied being the effect it has on cancer patients in improving their quality of life, according to Markey Cancer Center. Patients attending a session are asked to rate their pain, stress, and nausea on a scale of 1-10, and then are lightly touched on 52 points called “Safety Energy Locks,” as well as main points of energy flow. At the end of the session, they are asked to assess their symptoms again, who usually gave lower ratings.

Some people experience more positive outlooks on life, motivation, an increase in effective communication, decrease in muscle aches, and lower depressive episodes. Jin Shin Jyutsu promotes overall emotional and physical health in a way that does not require medication or extremely large amounts of time.
